Gin's Tonic Speaker Dinner
and Book Launch
Virginia (Ginny) MacRobert
Tuesday 2 March - Compass Room - 1900hrs
STOP PRESS!! Book Signing - for those of you who cannot attend the speaker dinner, Ginny will be here at the Main Lawn on Kellett Island from 1530hrs to 1830hrs on Saturday 6 March. Come down have a chat, buy a book and get it signed!
Members will recall reading of Ginny's life-changing and adventurous cruise around the world in Ahoy! in 2008. Under her captainship, Catamaran Sailing Vessel Dai Long Wan and crew left the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club dock on 1 October 2006, and arrived back on 9 March 2008, an absence of 493 days, 265 on the ocean. Gin's Tonic, her daily log, recorded the journey and her new book 'Gin's Tonic: Ocean Voyage, Inner Journey' is set to be launched at the Club on Tuesday 2 March at 1900hrs in the form of a speaker dinner.
Circumnavigator Ginny, was born in Australia many full moons ago and raised on a farm in New South Wales, which prepared her for a life of adventure. A few careers and a few decades later she found herself in Hong Kong raising a large family, all of whom learned to sail. The family is another story. As the members matured and left home to develop their own careers she decided that the family sailing catamaran ought not to be sitting at the dock collecting barnacles and so prepared herself, the dog Henry, and the boat for an extended cruise, right around the world. The journey was life-changing and far more adventure was had than anticipated.
Part of Ed Vaughan's Preface reads... "Ginni MacRobert [has] huge amounts of competence and honesty, two very, very rare and valuable elements required to make a successful passage as skipper of any boat, much less a boat sailing around the world in eighteen months! That kind of sailing takes courage, focus, patience and total dedication in a world where there are no Instruction Books and no 'Thank You's. In other words, to do what Ginni has done, you'd better be selfsufficient physically and, most importantly, psychologically. Maybe she has succeeded so well against all the odds because she grew up on a cattle station in the Outback or maybe it's just because she is naturally strong, and by that I mean she gets what she wants and leaves all parties smiling.
Maybe it's because she is smart, and by that I mean she cuts through the bull, gets the info and learns it instantly, takes the recommended action and usually leaves all parties smiling. But the part of Ginni MacRobert that is most interesting is her fearlessness. So what fun it will be to sail around the world with Ginni MacRobert as you read and ask yourself, "What would I do now?!" It's an honour to welcome you aboard this book and to know that you are about to discover pure courage."
Tickets to this event are only $398 per person and includes a 3-course dinner.
